Meaning and origin of the stone

Nephrite is a mineral from the amphibole group, made up of extremely fine, interwoven fibrous crystals. That microstructure is exactly what makes nephrite one of the toughest natural stones: it barely chips, only wears down gradually, which is why prehistoric people, before metal tools existed, shaped nephrite into axes, knives and points — the stone held up to impact better than flint.

In China, nephrite has held for millennia the place gold and diamonds occupy in Western culture — called the "stone of heaven," valued not for rarity but for its symbolic tie to virtue. Confucius compared the qualities of a noble person to those of jade: hardness without harshness, purity without fragility.

How to spot a fake and care for the stone

Held up to light, genuine nephrite shows a slight fibrous, "soapy" texture, and it feels noticeably heavier and cooler to the touch than plastic or dyed glass of the same size. When two pieces of real nephrite are lightly tapped together, they produce a muted but clear, bell-like ring — imitations sound duller and shorter.

Jade's hardness is 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, but its real strength is exceptional toughness: it almost never chips, even under hard knocks, which is why jade jewelry counts among the most durable there is. Even so, it's worth protecting the stone from abrasives that can scratch its polished surface.
