Aspects in Astrology
Aspects are angular distances between planets in the natal chart. They show how planets interact — reinforcing or opposing each other.
Major Aspects
Conjunction (0°) — Orb ±8° Planets merge into a single energy. The most powerful aspect — it intensifies both planets. Can be harmonious or tense — depends on the planets involved.
Opposition (180°) — Orb ±8° Opposition, search for balance. Creates tension between two life areas. Conscious work with an opposition leads to integration of opposites.
Trine (120°) — Orb ±8° Easy energy flow, talents, what comes without effort. Considered the most harmonious aspect. Planets in trine share the same element.
Square (90°) — Orb ±8° Friction, conflict, need for action. Creates inner tension that motivates. A challenging but productive aspect of growth.
Sextile (60°) — Orb ±6° Opportunities, easy interaction. Less powerful than a trine, but creates chances for growth with modest effort.
Minor Aspects
Semi-square (45°) and Sesquiquadrate (135°) — irritation, minor friction.
Quintile (72°) — creative potential, special talents.
Biquintile (144°) — original abilities.
How to Read Aspects in a Chart
When interpreting, consider:
- Which planets form the aspect (Venus-Mars vs. Saturn-Moon — different stories)
- What type of aspect (harmonious or tense)
- The orb — the smaller, the more exact and powerful the aspect
- Natal vs. transiting — in a natal chart the aspect is permanent; a transiting aspect acts temporarily
Planetary Patterns
When several aspects form a figure:
- Grand Trine — three planets in trine (120°×3): closed talent energy
- T-Square — opposition + square: tense but powerful configuration
- Grand Cross — four squares: maximum tension and drive to act
- Mystic Rectangle — two trines + two sextiles: hidden talents
