First Quarter — what it means and what to do during this phase

First Quarter Moon: a moment of decisions and obstacles on the way to your goal. What to do, and what to avoid. With the next date and a link to the lunar calendar.

What happens to the Moon

The first quarter arrives roughly 7–8 days after the new moon, when the Moon has covered a quarter of its path toward the full moon. The visible disk is lit exactly halfway — from Earth the line between light and shadow looks like a straight edge splitting the Moon in two.

The word "quarter" refers not to shape but to the fraction of the cycle completed: the Moon has traveled a quarter of its orbital path from the new moon point.

Energy and meaning

The first quarter is the phase of the first real test. The momentum built during the waxing crescent meets its first genuine resistance: circumstances turn out harder than they looked at the start, and the original plan needs adjusting. That's a normal, expected part of the cycle, not a signal to abandon what's been started.

In astrology this point is sometimes called a "crisis of action" — not in the sense of catastrophe, but of a fork in the road: push through with effort, or step back.

What to do during the first quarter

  • Make decisions — the phase favors clear, weighed choices rather than putting things off.
  • Meet obstacles head-on — deal with the difficulty instead of going around it.
  • Adjust the plan — check the original intention against what reality has shown, and correct course.
  • Act decisively — the phase's energy supports firm action rather than passivity.

What to avoid during the first quarter

  • Dropping the plan at the first difficulty — an obstacle in this phase is part of the process, not a sign to stop.
  • Delaying a decision — indecision costs more here than in other phases.
  • Ignoring the signals — if a plan clearly isn't working, it's more useful to adjust it now than to push on blindly.

First quarter and zodiac signs

The sign the Moon occupies at this point shapes the nature of the obstacle and how to meet it: in Aries it tends to be a direct confrontation and a quick decision, in Cancer a matter tied to emotions and family. The previous point in the cycle is the waxing crescent, where the first steps were taken. Next comes the waxing gibbous, the phase of fine-tuning before culmination.
