Five Elements of Feng Shui

In Chinese cosmology, everything consists of five primordial elements — wu xing (五行). Unlike the Western four elements, wu xing describes not substances but processes and energy qualities. Balancing all five elements in a space creates harmonious qi. The Bagua map, overlaid on a home's floor plan, draws on these same five elements.

Element Characteristics

🌿 Wood (木 Mu)

  • Energy: growth, development, upward movement
  • Direction: East, Southeast
  • Colors: green, blue-green
  • Shapes: vertical, columnar
  • Materials: natural wood, live plants
  • Sphere: health, family, creative growth

🔥 Fire (火 Huo)

  • Energy: transformation, passion, visibility
  • Direction: South
  • Colors: red, orange, bright yellow
  • Shapes: triangular, pointed
  • Materials: candles, lighting fixtures, electronics
  • Sphere: fame, reputation, inspiration

🌍 Earth (土 Tu)

  • Energy: stability, nourishment, centering
  • Direction: Center, Northeast, Southwest
  • Colors: yellow, beige, brown, terracotta
  • Shapes: square, horizontal
  • Materials: ceramics, clay, stone, brick
  • Sphere: health, partnership, stability

🥈 Metal (金 Jin)

  • Energy: clarity, precision, completion
  • Direction: West, Northwest
  • Colors: white, gray, gold, silver
  • Shapes: round, arched
  • Materials: metals, glass, mirrors
  • Sphere: children, helpers, mental clarity

💧 Water (水 Shui)

  • Energy: flow, depth, wisdom
  • Direction: North
  • Colors: black, dark blue, dark gray
  • Shapes: asymmetrical, wavy
  • Materials: aquariums, fountains, mirrors (vertical)
  • Sphere: career, spiritual development, communication

Interaction Cycles

Creation Cycle (Nourishing)

Each element nourishes the next in a circle: Water → Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water

  • Water nourishes Wood (rain grows trees)
  • Wood nourishes Fire (wood burns)
  • Fire nourishes Earth (ash fertilizes soil)
  • Earth nourishes Metal (ore forms underground)
  • Metal nourishes Water (metal condenses moisture)

Control Cycle (Restraining)

Each element restrains one, skipping one: Water → Fire → Metal → Wood → Earth → Water

  • Water extinguishes Fire
  • Fire melts Metal
  • Metal cuts Wood
  • Wood depletes Earth
  • Earth absorbs Water

How these directions map onto the zones of a home is covered in "Cardinal Directions in Feng Shui".

How to Apply in Interior Design

Too much Fire

Aggression, stress: add Water (dark tones, mirrors) or Earth (ceramics, muted tones).

Lack of Water

Career stagnation: place an aquarium or fountain in the north of the room, add dark blue accents.

Wood deficiency

No growth, fatigue: live plants in the east, wooden elements, green textiles.

Excess Metal

Coldness, rigidity: soften the space with wood (plants) or add warm earthy tones.

Little Earth

Instability, anxiety: add ceramic items, yellow and beige tones in central zones.
