Cardinal Directions in Feng Shui
In feng shui, each of the eight directions carries a unique energetic potential. Using directions correctly strengthens the areas of life you need and eliminates energetic imbalances.
How to Determine Directions
Use a compass or a smartphone app. Stand in the center of the room (or apartment) and mark all eight directions. Plot them on a floor plan to understand where each Bagua zone is located.
Each direction corresponds to its own element — for a full breakdown of the five feng shui elements, their energy, and materials, see "Five Elements of Feng Shui".
The Eight Directions

- Recommendations: aquarium or tabletop fountain, dark accents in décor, smooth shapes. Avoid fire and bright red tones here.

- Element: Earth
- Colors: yellow, beige, terracotta
- Recommendations: desk or study area, bookshelves, crystals. A good place for quiet meditation.
➡ East — Family and Health
- Element: Wood

- Recommendations: live plants with rounded leaves, family photos, wooden elements. Avoid metal and excess white.
↘ Southeast — Prosperity and Luck

- Recommendations: images of patrons and mentors, metal wind chimes, travel maps. A power spot for attracting the right people.
Practical Tips
Command position
Regardless of direction, main furniture (bed, desk, sofa) should be placed so you can see the entrance door.
Avoid sharp corners
Furniture with pointed edges aimed at your rest or work area creates "poison arrows" — aggressive sha qi.
Mirrors
Amplify the energy of a zone. Place them consciously: a mirror in the Prosperity zone doubles abundance, while in a Conflict zone it amplifies problems.
The entrance door
The "mouth of qi." It should open freely, be well lit, and kept in order. The direction of the entrance door shapes much of the character of a home.
